Parenting or child rearing is one of the initial processes that come to promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social development of a child from infancy to adulthood. While parenting initially refers to the raising of the child but not only a biological relationship. The most common caretakers involve a father or a mother, while other than the biological parents’ other people take responsibility for the child, which also comes under parenting. 

Role of the society 

The government and the society as a whole also play a role in the child-rearing process. While some children are adopted or raised in foster care or placed in an orphanage, there are many parenting children, and it depends on one individual to another. It could be just a parent or a surrogate with good parenting skills, and it does not matter if the child and the parent are biologically related as long as the child is well taken care of and is happy. Any parent is a good parent. There have been many styles that have influenced the various decisions which have been taken in the process of parenting. Though the parents might be strict or might teach their child good values, the child doesn’t have to imbibe those values. 

Role of culture

Many things that place an extraordinarily strong impact on the child-rearing process, like the 

  • Social class 
  • Wealth 
  • Culture 
  • Finances

Culture plays a significant role in the raising of the child. The cultural values imbibed by the child usually speaks for the child in the society. Parenting does not have a manual, and it just happens naturally when you decided to start a family. Some parents can provide a lot more means than other parents, and the child must know that no matter what, his/her parents are doing their best to give them the means they need and making ends meet comfortably. 

Social class

The family’s social class plays a vital role in terms of the roles and opportunities available to the child as an individual. Simultaneously, the working class or the financially low-income families might not afford to send their children to schools and give them an incredibly good education. Simultaneously, some of the families might be exceedingly rich and afford to send their children to particularly good schools or colleges, along with entertaining their needs and wants, while helping them enhance their hobbies and extra-curricular activities. Yes, the richer part of the society might have opportunities that are handed to them on a silver platter, that does not mean that a middle class or a financially poor class child cannot earn the opportunity through arduous work and determination. The child should be taught to be determined in life, irrespective of any factors. 

Emotional Climate

The emotional climate at home is one of the main factors which should be taken into the picture. At the same time, the parenting style is very dependant on the emotional climate at home. Parenting is more or less related to the mental health as well as the well-being of the child. There are many types of parents, starting from authoritative parenting and permissive parenting, the child tends to learn a lot from the parents as role models. Parents can make mistakes; they should teach their children that their mistakes do not matter in the big picture. They should learn from their mistakes. It is important to be happy within the means which are available to us. 

Parenting practice

The parenting practice brings out a specific behavior that a parent uses in the child-raising process. Some parents bring out certain habits for the well being of the child, linguistically and intellectually. Like developing a habit for the overall development of the child. While there are many types of parenting which are present in the world, there are certain characteristics that categorize the parenting under each type:

  • Authoritarian parenting: They usually have an extremely strict code of conduct, with little negotiation possible. There are usually punishments as consequences, while the communication happens only one way, between the parent to child. Usually, parents with these characteristics are less nurturing and have extremely grand expectations with no/limited flexibility to exercise one’s needs. 
  • Permissive parenting: while this is the opposite of strict parenting. There are limited or no rules involved in the process, where the child is free to explore solutions to his/her problems. Communication is mostly open, but mostly the parents let the children figure out the problems. Parents are mostly warm and nurturing, while the expectations are minimal. 
  • Uninvolved parenting: These parents give children a lot of freedom and stay clear of their way. They usually do not care about what their children are up to. While some parents stay clear of the decision to parent their children that way, there is usually no discipline involved in the parenting. While communication is limited, the parents are usually less nurturing. There are few or no expectations of the children from the parents. It is like the children avoid their life as individuals living under the same roof. 
  • Authoritative parenting: Parents are usually reasonable and nurturing while avoiding their expectations from their children. While the children of parents who follow self-disciple and think for themselves as well. This is meant to be beneficial for the children. While the rules of the parents are noticeably clear, very efficient reasoning is given for the same. The parents are nurturing, and the expectations and goals are set high and clearly stated. 

While many parents might not necessarily fit into one category, many pick out a few points from each category. It is best to treat your children as friends, so they confide in you if anything goes wrong. It is important to sometimes look into the child’s life and guide them accordingly because they are your responsibility. Yes, they can make mistakes on the way and learn from them, but leaving them to be on their own could derail them and let them into a very ignorant and dark place.
